🌟 Internuclear ophthalmoplegia

 🎯 Pathology

  • eye movement disorder due to a lesion in the medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF)

  • the MLF is an essential tract for the coordination of eye movements

💡 Types

  • multiple sclerosis

  • brainstem infarction

  • infections (e.g. syphilis, HIV, herpes zoster)

🩺 Clinical features

  • for example, if the patient is looking to the left and the right medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF) is affected

  • ipsilateral eye: impaired ADDuction (cannot look to the left)

  • contralateral eye: abduction with nystagmus

  • clinical diagnosis

💆‍♂️ Management

  • treat the underlying cause
